CHICAGO (WLS) - The National Weather Service confirmed that a dozen tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area during a rare storm known as Derecho, a spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources said. At least one tornado with an estimated top wind of 110 mph was confirmed to have touched down near Loves Park, Illinois, south of the city of Chicago. CHICACO - WLLL - The National Weather Service at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago confirmed that at least two tornadoes, both measured at top winds of 110 mph, struck near the town of Loved Park on the city's south side.
The NWS said the tornadoes were maximum in width of 250 yards and caused the most damage, with fallen trees, destroyed farm buildings dumped with debris in nearby fields and large baskets of grain bent inward, according to a news release from the National Weather Service in Chicago. The tornado touched down and moved 4.9 miles before narrowly taking off I-55 , said the N WS. It continued to cause severe tree damage as it continued east toward South Chicago Heights and rose near Schubert's Forest Preserve. As the tornado moved toward Crest Hill, it moved south of the city of Chicago and then continued north toward the Chicago River, which was near the intersection of North Chicago Avenue and South Michigan Street.
The NWS said the most severe damage occurred at the intersection of North Chicago Avenue and South Michigan Street, near the Chicago River and Chicago Park.
